    Dear Parents/Guardians,

Recently, NSD has updated board policies to comply with Missouri State Statute 168.133 regarding background check requirements for public school volunteers. The update, found in House Bill 604, states:

“The school district shall ensure that a criminal background check is conducted for all screened volunteers, who shall complete the criminal background check prior to being left alone with a student.”

The background check process includes submitting fingerprints to the Missouri State Highway Patrol for a criminal history search, which is then forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a federal criminal history search.

To comply with this legislation, the District has updated our volunteer application process. Please see the attached volunteer packet or visit our website, Neosho School District, for complete instructions.

    Important Notes:

    • While this legislation requires a different process and an increased fee, the District will receive updates once the volunteer is in the Missouri State Highway Patrol system.

    • The criminal background check is no longer required annually; it is a one-time requirement with a single fee.

    Definitions:

    • Volunteer: Individuals who assist the school on an uncompensated basis and may occasionally be unsupervised with students. This includes assisting in the school office or library, mentoring or tutoring students, coaching or supervising activities before or after school, attending field trips, or chaperoning overnight trips.

    • Visitor: Individuals not providing a service to the school or students, such as parents attending classroom parties, lunch with students, assemblies, or other events.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this process. Volunteers are an integral part of the NSD community, and we appreciate your support for our staff and students.
